what are the name of those tiny green turtles you buy illegally in chinatown?
theyre tiny and green, like the length of about a double AA battery and they seem to die pretty quickly. what are they called? are they really illegal.

They are hatchling red ear sliders. They actually are illegal in some states…

I think they are red ear sliders. It depends on the state. Most states it is illegal to sell any turtle less then 4" across. The reason is that children put everything in their mouth.

They are almost always red-eared sliders. Legality is a gray area. In theory federal law prohibits the selling of turtles smaller than 4" in shell length but there are exceptions. The one that might apply is that it is legal to sell them for educational purposes. You learn something from keeping a turtle, don’t you? At least, that is what a lawyer would argue.

Most of them are red ear sliders, although occasionally you will find yellow belly sliders or painted turtles being sold. They die quickly because people don’t know how to take care of them properly. They should live 20 years or more. Sadly, people are too dense to pick up a book or do a simple online search on how to take care of their animals, and they end up killing them way too early. Most of the ones you see for sale are, in fact, being sold illegally. It is illegal in the United States to sell a turtle with a shell length under 4 inches. The only exceptions are sales for educational purposes (purchaser should be able to produce proof that they are an educator) or sales between "reptile enthusiasts" (both purchaser and seller should be knowledgeable on all care requirements for the species being sold).
